Please welcome Meegan from Redstar5 – Work in Progress. Meegan and I have a lot in common, especially the fact that we are both pretty slow losers. You can visit Meegan’s blog here.
———————————–
Bobbie and I have something in common. We tend to fight this weight loss battle in a slow but fiercely determined fashion. We both got a little fed up with the way we had been leading our lives and have made some big changes. Changes we’ve grown to love and incorporate into our lives. I think we both also get a little frustrated sometimes with our fierce determination not resulting in seriously swift weight loss, but it helps knowing we’re not alone.
I started this weight loss journey in earnest when I turned 30 in February of 2009. I was 289lbs. Now it’s almost a year and a half later and at my last weigh in I was 213lbs. That’s 76lbs in 16.5 months or 66 weeks. That makes my weight loss average only slightly better than 1lb a week. That is slow (but steady) weight loss.
Some of my before and after pictures:
I mean seriously, would any of us ask for slow weight loss? So many people seem to be searching for that magic pill, diet, solution – anything that will bring on the skinny overnight. We all want that perfect beach body in the blink of an eye. We don’t want to wait weeks, months, even years to reach our weight loss goals. But here’s the thing, for many of us (or at least for Bobbie and I so far) on the path to lasting weight loss that’s the only way it happens. SLOWLY.
Now that I know that slow is the way this will be happening for me – I am learning to love slow. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s a challenge to say that you like weight loss slow and steady. It is tough to be satisfied with progress when it comes little by little. But if this is how it is for me, I’m going to grow to accept it. I’m a slow loser. In fact, I have never been able to do anything fast before.
-
I don’t run fast,
-
I don’t move fast,
-
I don’t think fast (I tend to ruminate and over think) and,
-
I definitely don’t lose weight fast.
It’s frustrating. But when you decide not to be satisfied with your status quo YOU CHANGE. With all of the changes I’ve been making in the last 66 weeks I’ve learned that:
-
I can run. It may be slower than all the other girls in my bootcamp, but I can run and it’s faster than before.
-
I’m teaching my body HOW to move fast – and it feels good.
-
I still analyze everything, but I don’t agonize over anything and life is SO much more straightforward that way.
-
The one thing I haven’t been able to solve or change has been the pace at which I lose weight.
I’m almost a year and a half into this journey and I’m still losing weight slowly. But you know what, every decision, every pound; every change I’ve made has been worth it. The frustration will come and it will go, but I’m proud of the progress of I’ve made so far. I’m still losing pounds, and I’m making major gains in learning to live a healthier and happier life. Slow weight loss progress is still progress and its progress in the direction I want to be heading. In fact, I like to think that there are divine reasons for the slower pace:
-
I like to think that losing the weight at a slower pace is giving my mind and body time to adjust to my new healthy way of life.
-
I like to think that it means I will live my life this way forever, and keep the weight off forever because I’m learning to do it slowly.
-
I like to think that maybe, just maybe, I will minimize at least a little bit of the whole loose skin factor by losing weight at a slower pace.
-
I like to think that it’s giving myself the time I need to let new habits simply become my way of living life instead of something I’m just trying out until I reach my goals.
-
I like to think that slower weight loss means my perceptions of who I am in a new body will have time to keep pace.
-
I like to think a year of slow and steady weight loss has made lasting changes, in my life, in the way I think and in the mirror.
Bottom line – slow is good. Slow and steady really can win the weight loss race and make some serious lasting changes. After 66 weeks, with no turning back now, I am learning to love slow.

Great guest post Meegan… 76lbs in 66 weeks is great progress. We are losing weight to make a better life for ourselves for the rest of our lives. What matters is the losses we make over time, not one day to the next or even one week to the next. Where were you last month to this? Last July 31st to this? If 66 weeks ago someone had told you, told any of us, that we’d be 76 pounds lighter and asked if we’d be Ok with that, I am guessing all of us would have said YES.

Thanks Patrick! I definitely agree, I would definitely have said YES to that question (and likely never would have believed I could make that kind of progress).

Yay for guest posts!!! I kind of want to write one but just don’t know if I have what it takes.
You know who has what it takes Meegan? YOU!!!!! Slow and steady is the only way to do it. We want it and we wanted it yesterday. Some days I wake up and wish I could just take a pill to finish out the rest of this weight loss but then I realize that there is no “finish line”…it’s a lifetime journey and why race to the finish that doesn’t exist when you can enjoy the scenery and get used to something we’ll be doing for the next 30, 40, 50 years.
xoxo!

T you should definitely write a guest post. You can be a guest posting superstar! There are definitely those days when I wish for the magic fix too – but I know there is no way I would know the impact of change if this was happening faster. xo

In my opinion 1lb/week is not slow but average (maybe low-average).
Mine is slow. it averages half a pound a week if I’m lucky. (sometimes I’m really not sure why – I calculate an average daily calorie deficit of -360, and that’s including break-even days and over-doing it days.)
but kudos to you. i’m impressed with anyone who can put up with a trainer, lol. obviously it pays off.

Hi Allison! You’re right, perspective is so important and “slow” is all relative. Thank you for the kudos and huge props to you for your perseverance and battling the “slow”. It can be so frustrating sometimes, but progress is still progress!
And yes, having a trainer is a love/hate relationship, but man it makes a big difference!

That is fantastic progress. I may be biased because I lost weight the same way…it took me almost 3 years to lose 115 pounds. But there is no doubt I wouldn’t be here if I chose instead to crash diet, “Adkins-it”, eat meals from boxes and envelopes or basically do anything other than follow a simple but proven technique: eat healthy (in healthy portions) and exercise in meaningful amounts every day. When I stopped fighting with myself and whining about how “hard” it was and how I was depriving myself and instead just did it, it wasn’t long before this regimen of healthy eating and fitness became a habit, became ingrained, and thus became a lifestyle.
You are living proof.
And hey, going slowly is fun. It gives us a chance to “live” our changes and embrace them. Every day gets better and better and is something to look forward to, not something to dread or complain about.l

Wow – 115lbs is incredible, and so is changing your life to get it done. How long it takes is kind of irrelevant in the end isn’t it? And you’re right – learning to stop fighting and stop complaining that its “too hard” takes you the rest of the way there. I love your perspective – slow is fun and every day is better! Thanks for your kudos on my progress as well. PS – I’m adding you to my blog roll so I can follow your journey.

The before-and-after pictures are GREAT! And a little over one pound a week is steady progress, which means you’ll be able to keep it off!
Reworking those sentences into positive ones is great. That’s great inspiration for you and for others. Keep up the GREAT work!

I think its great that you mastered the art of patience. It is an absolutely necessary skill to have and be successful at this stuff. I think it is similarly important that you recognize the things that you are doing well even if they aren’t as fast as others.
This is your journey and yours alone. Thanks for your guest post!

Right on! One of my biggest pet peeves is that the weight loss blogosphere is all about FAST weight loss. And that’s OK, but it’s not always realistic and sometimes it’s unsafe. I’m slow, too, but it’s working and I’m learning how to keep it off through realistic healthy habits.

Slow is awesome. Slow is healthy. And for some of us, slow is the only way to do it. Not everybody’s got a metabolism that can drop pounds like bricks, and you’ve been at it long enough to know that you can keep it up on the long run.
Congratulations on how far you’ve gone so far! You’re amazing and inspiring!

I found this fascinating. In college I took a course in the psychology of learning. We learned that things learned over time are learned in a more permanent way than things learned by cramming. You slow, but steady pace is very similar to that theory. You may only lose about 1 lb per week, but you are consistently losing.
Well done!

Hi Karen! Very interesting indeed! Your observation makes perfect sense to me, and I’m feeling like there is definitely truth in that every day. I can add that positive thought to my list of reasons I’m glad this process has been a slow one…
Thanks!

It looks like I’m in great company in the Slow and Steady Club. I’m trying to be happy with my results as long as I’m heading in the right direction. I’ve lost weight quickly before but it never stayed off for long. Hopefully the longer it takes to lose this time will prevent it from coming back.

Hi MB – I think we have something in the theory that slow weight loss = lasting weight loss. I think there’s a certain habit forming/life changing process that happens when we can accept losing weight slowly and being good with it. Happy to have another in our Slow and Steady Club! – M
