Inspirational & funny personal trainer stuff

The other day I posted a few quotes that I found helpful on my journey and one of them was from my trainer Dean. Jonathan commented and asked if there were more “Dean catch phrases” I could post.

Some things Dean has said to me:

Only 80 year old women with little dogs go for walks. You wanna lose
weight, get healthy and be strong? Work your ass off in the gym.

________________________________

When you first walked into my gym, you had bags of shit hanging from
under your arms. Look now! Those bags of shit are disappearing!

________________________________

Don’t blame the amount of people in the gym, don’t blame ADD.
Get in here and do it because by now you should know what
we’re doing by me just pointing at the machine. Get at it, kick it
in the ass and lose the rest of your inches.

________________________________

Get up! I don’t care! Get up! Kick it in the ass!!!

________________________________

You CAN do this. Stop thinking you can’t because you CAN! Now finish it!

________________________________

No one else stops between every exercise to drink their
water. Stop wasting my time!!!

________________________________

There’s nothing better than seeing a woman that can
do pull ups and do them with good form. I’ve only ever seen two
or three women in my gym do them well.

________________________________

Slow it down and focus on the movements. The goal is good form.

________________________________

You burned 1429 calories during our workout? That has to be a gym
record and is a HUGE accomplishment. NO ONE burns that many calories!

You are the strongest girl I have ever trained.

Of course my favorite is the last one because it’s quite possibly one of the most unique and best compliments I have ever been given when you consider how much weight I have to lose!

Dean is just one of those types of people that will push you and push you HARD. If you are NOT willing to give him the same drive and hard work he gives you, then he gets very frustrated.

Here I am working out upper body with Dean.
You can see the related video here.

There have been times where we have butted heads because we both have very, very strong personalities. But I love Dean, he’s the best motivator I know and I’m very privileged to know and workout WITH him and call him a friend.

I say workout WITH him because the last few workouts he’s invited me to workout WITH him. There’s no better compliment to me then to be included in HIS workout.

Here’s what Dean posted on his Face Book wall right after our workout Thursday night:

“Busted out back and biceps with Bobbie. She kicked my butt!!”

I know he’s trying to motivate me, but it was great to read because it DID motivate me. I told you he’s a great motivator, didn’t I? The truth of the matter was he kicked MY butt, but I’ll take the motivation and run with it. :)

Here I am doing the leg press with Dean’s help.
You can see the related video here.

I know when I’ve had a really good workout because I’ll be covered in sweat from head to toe. I’m no longer out of breath like I used to be in the beginning. We don’t break much in between exercises anymore, maybe thirty seconds if anything. I just don’t need the time that I used to. I’m getting so strong and I can feel it. Our workouts are paying off big time.

Have you ever worked out with a trainer before? Then you might relate to this, as given to me from one of my fellow gym patrons, Vicki.

A WOMAN’S WEEK AT THE GYM

If you read this without laughing out loud, there is something wrong with you. This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.

Dear Diary,
For my birthday this year, my Husband (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.

My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started. The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god – with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today.

Very inspiring!

Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week !!
________________________________
TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT !! It’s a whole new life for me.
_______________________________
WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other shit too.
_______________________________
THURSDAY:
Asshole was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late – it took me that long to tie my shoes.

He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny little bitch to find me.

Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine — which I sank.

FRIDAY:
I hate that bastard Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little aerobic instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it.

Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps! And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?
__________________________
SATURDAY:
Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY:
I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun — like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds !!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

I could relate to the tooth brush one. After my first tough arms workout I struggled washing my hair in the shower. I had to bend down to meet my hands. It was hilarious.

It’s important to find a trainer whose style is compatible with yours. I think you have done just that.

It is so funny that you wrote this post. I was thinking about writing a post about my trainer’s favorite little motivational phrases. I call them “Greggisms” in my head. LOL!

I love the Dean catch phrases! I’m so glad that you have such a great, great trainer. You are strong!!

I hit the jackpot with all the different trainers I worked with. They each had their positives, and it seemed as though each arrived just when I needed her/him most. They knew how to motivate and inspire, without putting me down or diminishing my efforts. Of course, it helped that I gave it everything I had and more than I had a couple of times. :) *sigh* I miss my trainers.

Sounds like you have a “Jillian” on your side!!! You have to like & feel comfortable with your trainer & looks like you have that! Well, like is relative – HA!!!!

I have not had a trainer but I learned a lot of what I know from the guy that got me to do the bodybuilding. I worked out with him for about 3 years.

I have seen that joke before & always fun to read again!

He’s actually one of my web design clients. He offered to train me and we worked out a bit of a barter/trade. We live in a very small town and his gym is one of only two. :)

Sounds like you have a great trainer! You are very lucky!

[Reply]

1) you are clearly a rock star when it comes to the gym, and 2) ohmygod that was so funny! i snorted my coffee when i read ‘don’t expect me to lift anything heavier than a sandwich!”

i did a couple sessions with a personal trainer. it’s a little too expensive for me but i tried it out. the girl i got clearly had never struggled with her weight; she was nice but just didn’t get it. and i asked for a routine with the weights and she gave me some fat-busting routine with the exercise ball. i knew i would continue a routine with the weight machines because i like them. the ones with the exercise/yoga ball didn’t last two weeks. i call it the ball of pain and torture.

I would have been frustrated with a trainer like that too! I guess that’s why I really like having a guy trainer. I don’t know if I’d like having a woman trainer. Especially if she didn’t listen to me and my needs or understood how hard it is as an overweight person to do these things.

[Reply]

I like the last one about you being strong, too, but the one that I’m stealing to make my personal mantra is this one: “Get up! I don’t care! Get up! Kick it in the ass!!!“

EXACTLY what I need running through my head for fitness and for life right now. EXCELLENT.

You’re doing so amazing. I’m just in awe of you.

Haha! Those are some fun quotes! Glad your trainer is keeping you laughing and happy! That is one of the most important things about losing weight, is to stay positive and have fun with it. Keep up the good work!
